End of September

September went out in style.

We had more kitchen dance parties.

On a no-school weekday, Summer took Madeline to the Roger Williams Park carousel ...

... and the zoo ...

... where Madeline got up close and personal with a red river hog ...

... and with a bear.

Then came more dance parties.

Last Saturday, we picked up sandwiches from Ricotti's in Bristol -- home of by far the best Italian sub I've had in Rhode Island -- and then took advantage of a Smithsonian promotion to visit Bristol's Blithewold for free.

The day was gorgeous.

And the kids enjoyed themselves.

As did we all.

Blithewold had a neat exhibit of kinetic sculptures spread across the grounds.  Madeline especially liked this one.

And we appreciated the tried and true elements of Blithewold, among them the bayfront ...

... and the moon gate.

On Sunday morning, Madeline and I were busy in the kitchen.  We made cookies and then undertook an experiment I'd been curious about: we roasted acorns (after brining them to remove the bitter tannins).

They were surprisingly sweet -- almost cinnamon-flavored.  Yum.

After all this kitchen activity, I headed to a work event while Summer took the kids to a softball game going on right by our house.  Madeline was hooked.

Oliver found other ways to amuse himself.

Meanwhile, I was here ...

... and here.

That night, Oliver got some ice cream.  He was pretty pleased about this.

So ended our September.
