Vacation Day 4: Fort Williams

On day 4, after our swim, we checked out of the hotel and proceeded to Fort Williams Park.  We started at the lighthouse ...

... walked along the rocky coast ...

... checked out the fort ...

... and ended up on a rocky beach where Oliver threw rocks into the water ...

... while Madeline carefully examined each and every rock ...

... deciding which was the very best.

Vacation Day 3 & 4: Portland Museum of Art & swimming

On day 3, we visited the Portland Museum of Art.

The museum had lots of great art ...

... and an opportunity for Madeline to contribute her own art.

Unfortunately, by this point Oliver was thoroughly worn out.  He melted down and ended our visit early.

Back at the hotel, Madeline continued working on her art ...

... while Oliver worked on recovering from his morning.

The next morning, we indulged for the third time in a trip to the hotel pool -- the highlight of Oliver's trip.

Whee!

Vacation Day 2: Pinewood Farms & seafood

On day 2, we ventured out to Pinewood Farms for a kiddo-friendly demonstration of maple sugaring.  Madeline and Oliver each got to help hammer a tap into a tree to collect sap!

The farm also featured laying hens ...

... and lots of adorable baby calves!

After the farm, we got lunch at Susan's Fish-N-Chips ...

... including delicious chowder and lobster rolls!

Vacation Day 1: Peaks Island &c.

Also in March the kiddos had their spring break.  Rejecting the siren song of the south, we instead drove north, through New Hampshire ...

... to Portland, Maine.

Our planned lunch spot had a long wait, but we found another spot where a kindly patron gave the kiddos a pot of clovers in honor of St. Patrick's Day!

After lunch, we caught a ferry ...

...  Oliver's first boat ride!

He loved it.

We landed at Peaks Island without much of a plan.  So we walked around and, after visiting Brackett Point and finding no public shore access, instead ended up at a lovely little beach at City Point.

Madeline ran around and did tricks.

Oliver gathered and lined up stones.

And then we caught the ferry back to the mainland ...

... where we checked into our hotel room.  The kiddos were excited to sleep on a bed that pulled out from a couch.

That evening we availed ourselves of Portland's beer scene, dining at a brewpub and sampling its wares.

Start of March

The start of March featured life as usual.

Oliver has really taken to painting.

The kiddos love cuddling up with Petey and watching shows.

There was one special occasion in early March: we met up with Geoff at the Worcester Art Museum and saw artwork (including an Ed Emberley exhibit), an arms-and-armor demonstration, and a neat ancient mosaic.

Plus it was nice just to hang out.

Then it was back to the usual, like drawing and reading books.

One day we went to see Moana -- Oliver's first movie at a theater!  But Madeline got terrifically frightened at the opening scene and begged to leave, so she and I spent the length of the movie at Burlington Coat Factory, where she picked out suits for her and Oliver.

Another day we went to North Kingstown Town Beach.  The tide was very low so we climbed up on this big rock.

But it was very cold so we didn't stay out long!

One of Madeline's teachers from art camp last year babysat and turned the kiddos on to stop motion.  They now devote hours at a time to constructing setups and characters and filming one- to ten-second-long videos.
